'Bah humbug' to Aussies who don't like Halloween

Parents were just as enthusiastic as their kids.

Vampires, ninjas and ghosts have run amok on the streets of Melbourne as thousands turned out to celebrate Halloween.

Many put in their best fangs, put on their favourite costume, and even cut up bed sheets to mark the event, which is growing in popularity in Australia.

On Finch Street in the Melbourne suburb of Malvern East, the annual debate around whether the day should be observed Down Under did not seem to matter.

The only thing on every child's mind was how quickly they could fill up on sugar.

David Copolov lives on the street and dressed up as a witch to hand out treats.

"It's wonderful, [the kids] are young and enthusiastic, always polite," he said.

"Some of them come back a few times, they try to trick me into giving them more lollies.

"It's part of Australia, even though it's an American tradition, we've accepted it, and it's really enjoyable."

Lucy Connolly said everyone on the street got involved.

"It's actually really nice around here, it's all the little kids, a family zone," she said.

"I like it, it's good for the kids, they love it."

One woman, dressed as French queen Marie Antoinette, carried a cake bought from a local store.

She said the celebration was "awesome", and an excellent opportunity to dress up.

"It's so good, anyone who doesn't like it, bah humbug to them," she said.

The supply of lollies on Finch Street didn't last long with the huge turnout.

It has left many with no choice but to return next year.
