BAFTAS red carpet: Lace, long sleeves, a bit of puff and a warm blast of yellow

Awards season has made it to the UK, with the stars adapting their red carpet looks for the British climate at the BAFTA awards.

Some leaned into it by opting for the dark romantic look, dabbling in gothic glamour.

Others went on the other end of the spectrum, turning up the colour dial in defiance of the typically grey British sky.

Here's what we saw on the red carpet.

Gothic glam

Lady Gaga's green gown works on the red carpet, but would also be perfect for an elegant soiree at a stormy castle. And while she may be holding that clutch like a wet bag of veggie scraps she doesn't want touching her, at least we're getting a good look at it.  (AP: Joel C Ryan)
Salma Hayek is leaning right into the gothic vibe with this look: black fingernails, dark purple, velvet and black lace.  (AP: Joel C Ryan)
With those shoulder pads, Catriona Balfe's silhouette hints she may have giant bat wings folded up behind her — and it works. (AP: Joel C Ryan)
With that crescent moon tattoo and those studs that look like stars, Emma Appleton's look is reminiscent of a dark night.  (AP: Vianney Le Caer)

Puff and fluff

The top of Daisy Ridley's dress is a nod to classic Hollywood glamour, while the puffy bottom half is for the moody ballerina that lives in all of us. (AP: Joel C Ryan)

Lace it up

Millie Bobby Brown's number could be a two-in-one gown for an emo wedding — picture her wearing the long lace skirt during the ceremony and ripping it away on the dancefloor when My Chemical Romance comes on.  (AP: Joel C Ryan)
Without the gloves Sienna Miller's look would be perfectly fine for a red carpet event, but where's the fun in that? (AP: Joel C Ryan)
Compared to the dark and moody lacy numbers, Renate Reinsve is reminiscent of Glinda the Good Witch with this elegant choice.  (AP: Vianney L Caer)

Not-at-all mellow yellow

Here comes the sun in the form of Ariana Debose, whose look is elevated from a cocktail dress level thanks to that flowing train and entirely necessary hip flower.  (AP: Vianney Le Caer)
Charlotte C Carroll also follows the yellow dress road, going with puffy bows and pink shoes to make sure she's impossible to miss.   (AP: Vianney Le Caer)

Bolts of colour

Andreea Cristea blends a few looks with this one — she goes bold with her colour choice and dabbles in puffery with those sleeves, but the dark nail polish and sleek bun hints she's been reading something by a Brontë sister.  (AP: Joel C Ryan)
Haley Bennett goes all-in with red and a voluminous skirt that demands a landscape shot. (AP: Vianney Le Caer)
Florence Pugh goes dark with this look, but that train of tulle lightens things up.  (AP: Joel C Ryan)
