Since 1947, the main winner of the annual British Academy Film Awards – known as the Baftas – has differed from the Oscars on many occasions.
Whereas surprises at the Academy Awards usually range on the bizarre (see: Driving Miss Daisy, Crash), the Baftas have a history of unexpectedly awarding the more deserving films.
These include early works of Martin Scorsese – a director whom the Academy failed to award until 2006 for The Departed – and foreign language releases, including films by French filmmakers François Truffaut and Henri-Georges Clouzot (Day for Night and The Wages of Fear).
For the past four years, the Baftas have gone against the Oscar grain, so it’ll be interesting to see which way they fall this Sunday, when the latest Best Film recipient is named at the Royal Albert Hall.
