BAFTAs 2023: Tom Cruise's Top Gun snub as Brendan Fraser and Colin Farrell lead nominees

The EE Bafta Film Awards 2023 nominations have been announced, with stars like Emma Thompson, Brendan Fraser, Colin Farrell and Austin Butler all in the running to take home a prestigious award next month.

Tom Cruise's blockbuster Top Gun sequel hasn't been recognised in any of the categories much to the disappointment of many, with one film fan writing: "I guess the voters just don’t get that this movie literally got everyone back in theaters and saved the business they work in."

This year’s BAFTAs, which will take place in London on 19 February, will be presented by Richard E Grant and This Morning star Alison Hammond, three weeks before the Oscars over in America.

The nominations were unveiled in a live stream on Bafta’s website on Thursday by actors Hayley Atwell, best known for playing Agent Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Ted Lasso’s Toheeb Jimoh.

All Quiet on the Western Front lead the way with a whopping 10 nominations, with Everything Everywhere All at Once and The Banshees of Inisherin picking up 10 nods each. Baz Luhrmann's Elvis appears in nine categories.

BAFTA's full list of nominations being announced follow the academy confirming this year's Rising Star nominees, with two stars from Sex Education in the running to be presented with the major honour.

Aimee Lou Wood and Emma Mackey, who play friends Aimee and Maeve in the Netflix seres, were among the nominees announced on Wednesday.

Naomie Ackie (Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody), The Woman King’s Sheila Atim and Good Luck to You, Leo Grande’s Daryl McCormack make up the rest of the nominees.
