BAFTAs 2020 viewers slam Graham Norton's jokes as opening mocks diversity row

Viewers of the BAFTAs at home were left disappointed by the jokes from host Graham Norton.

The 2020 ceremony for the BAFTA Film Awards which took place at the Royal Albert Hall in London tonight saw the BBC TV favourite deliver an opening speech that saw reference made to the diversity row around this year's nominations.

The controversy had sparked the hashtag #BaftasSoWhite after the list of nominees were revealed last month.

In his opening speech, Graham joked that the last year in Film was "the year when white men finally broke through."

He also commented on the Todd Phillips film Joker being "the story of a white man who makes himself even whiter", as the film boasted 11 nominations - of which it won Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix, Best Original Score, and Best Casting.

Graham also commented in jest about being a big fan of the critically-panned musical Cats.

He said: "I loved Cats. I really did! Cats but with hands, so clever!"

Viewers watching at home were about as amused as Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress nominee Scarlett Johansson looked - which was not very.

One wrote on Twitter: "Whoever has written both #GrahamNorton& the award intro scripts, will not ,I believe, be winning any script writing awards themselves in the very near future. #BAFTAs"

Another noted: " #BAFTAs This is absolute car crash TV. Awful jokes, terrible stuff from Graham Norton. #Garbage"

Elsewhere, one wrote: "Is there any need for Graham Norton’s smutty comments at the #BAFTAs? Not even funny. Remotely"

Meanwhile, one had sympathy despite the criticism: "The #BAFTAs are really painful to watch aren’t they? Why does anyone agree to present this? Graham Norton and the others are trying very hard indeed but still dying on national TV.'

Elsewhere, another commented: "eeesh graham norton proper stinking it up out there #BAFTAs"

Finally, one tweeted: "omg im watching it now Graham norton needs to stop immediately its cringe"

Ouch, well at least he looked lovely in his floral blazer!
