Baftas 2020: Chabuddy G actor Asim Chaudhry mocks Laurence Fox over 1917 comments

Comedian Asim Chaudhry sent up Laurence Fox at this year’s Baftas ceremony.

Although presenter Graham Norton delivered the event’s opening monologue, Chaudhry – who is known for playing the character Chabuddy G – jumped in with a short skit, where he auditioned both Sam Mendes and Jojo Rabbit’s Roman Griffin Davis for the role of introducing Norton to the stage.

To 1917 director Mendes, he said: “If you need any more brown guys for your war films, contact my agent. He’s Laurence Fox.”

Fox recently came under fire for saying that the inclusion of one Sikh soldier in the was drama “forced diversity” on viewers.

Chaudhry then referenced the #BaftasSoWhite trend, which dominated Twitter after the announcement of this year’s nominations last month following a severe lack of diversity and representation across the acting categories.

Meanwhile, both Margot Robbie and Scarlett Johansson received double nominations.

Sam Mendes’ First World War drama 1917 was the evening’s big winner taking home seven trophies in total.

The biggest talking point of the night arrived with Joaquin Phoenix’s powerful acceptance speech, which decried “systemic racism” that saw a lack of diversity in this year’s awards season.

Other key moments were Hugh Grant’s improvised Bridget Jones reference he delivered after presenting an award directly following Renée Zellweger’s Best Actress win for Judy. Brad Pitt’s speech, given by Margot Robbie, was also a hit.

Not all of the evening’s jokes went down so well, though.
