BAFTA suspends Bohemian Rhapsody director Bryan Singer's nomination

Bryan Singer’s nomination for Bohemian Rhapsody following sexual assault allegations, BAFTA has announced.

BAFTA confirmed on Wednesday that they have rescinded the director’s nomination “until the outcome of the allegations have been resolved”.

In a report published by The Atlantic last month, four men came forward to accuse Singer of having sex with them when they were teenagers. Each incident allegedly took place in the 1990s. Singer denies the allegations .

But in a statement, BAFTA confirmed that Singer’s name has been scrubbed from the nomination and the film, which documented the life of Freddie Mercury, remains nominated.

The body said: “In light of recent very serious allegations, BAFTA has informed Bryan Singer that his nomination for Bohemian Rhapsody has been suspended, effective immediately.

“BAFTA considers the alleged behaviour completely unacceptable and incompatible with its values. This has led to Mr Singer’s suspended nomination. BAFTA notes Mr Singer’s denial of the allegations.

"The suspension of his nomination will therefore remain in place until the outcome of the allegations has been resolved.”

The organisation confirmed that the film “remains nominated in the Outstanding British Film category” and that the other named candidates - Graham King and Anthony McCarten - remain nominated.

BAFTA concluded: “BAFTA believes everyone has the right to a fulfilling career in a safe, professional working environment, and it will continue to collaborate with the film, games and television industries to achieve this,” adding that they will not make any further comment.

The news comes days before the ceremony is due to take place in London on February 10.
