BAFTA 2021: Casualty beats EastEnders and Corrie to win Best Soap after Emmerdale snub

BBC1's Casualty has won a British Academy Television Award for Best Soap - beating its rival shows EastEnders and Coronation Street.

The hospital drama series had a phenomenal win on the awards show, which fans were rooting about.

The cast and crew formed together on the stage to celebrate picking up their gong.

Sadly, EastEnders and Corrie lost out on the award - following Emmerdale's snub from the BAFTA nomination list - despite winning the award for best soap in 2020.

The ITV soap did not receive one single nomination, and instead Corrie, EastEnders, Hollyoaks and Casualty were left to battle it out for the accolade at this year's ceremony.

EastEnders narrowly missed out on the win, but since the Best Soap and Continuing Drama category was introduced in 1999, the Walford-based programme has won it nine times, more than any other show.

On Twitter, fans were tweeting about Casualty's incredible win.

One fan of the show penned: "Yeesssss to #Casualty. Casualty beating Eastenders and Corrie. I’m glad to see that it’s being recognised as the top quality show that it is. Well deserved #VirginMediaBAFTAs #BAFTA."
