'Baffled' - Jermaine Beckford names the striker Leeds United should have signed in January

Jermaine Beckford has admitted he is "baffled" as to why Leeds United didn't try to sign Nahki Wells in January.

Leeds spent most of the New Year searching for reinforcements in attack before eventually adding Jean-Kevin Augustin to their ranks.

Che Adams, Andre Gray and Billy Sharp were all linked with a temporary switch to Elland Road but there was no discussion about a potential push for Wells, then on loan at Queens Park Rangers.

However, Wells was made available to purchase by his parent club Burnley, who recalled him from QPR and sold him on to Bristol City for £5m.

With 13 goals in 26 appearances to his name prior to his switch to Ashton Gate, including a controversial winner against Leeds, Beckford believes the club should have made an attempt to add the 29-year-old to their squad.

"If you are a Leeds United number nine, that's massive pressure in itself,” Beckford told talkSPORT.

“You know every game you are going to be judged whether you score one, two or three goals, not how many assists you get. That's been one of the biggest issues this season.

“Talking about forwards. Nahki Wells was available for £5 million. For me, when he was at QPR for the first half of the season, he scored a lot of goals.

“To know somebody was available, with Championship experience on the back of scoring how ever many goals he scored was a little bit baffling to myself as to why they didn't reach out and try to grab him on board."

Wells has scored once for the Robins since his January switch but was unable to force a way through at Elland Road on Saturday as Leeds ran out 1-0 winners.
