Baffled GMB viewers frustrated by GCSE results opening due to 'absurd' system

Baffled Good Morning Britain viewers were left frustrated by students opening their GCSE results today - because they couldn't understand what they meant.

Traditional A*-G grades have been scrapped and replaced with a numerical 9-1 system, with 9 the highest result.

Alex Onofrio-Mills and Francesca Barker were two of the pupils at a school in Oldbury, West Midlands, in front of the cameras.

GMB correspondent Katy Rickitt confessed she had to do her homework on the "confusing marking systems".

She said: "We’re looking for 5s and 6s guide. The new confusing marking systems that go from 9 to 1. I’m going to have to do my homework a bit here."

Confused Good Morning Britain viewers took to Twitter after watching the results opening.

One viewer said: "Exam Results.. You need a GCSE to Work out the 9-1 new Grading System...."

"What are 6s and 5s? In GCSE," added another.

A third said: "What an absurd grading system, when a grade 9 is the best rated....it's no wonder the education system is in the mess it is. But I guess numerals are more universal."

There were smiling faces all round when Alex and Francesca opened their incredible results.

Relieved presenter Richard Madeley said: "Thank god for that. What if they’d gone 'I’ve failed'?Congratulations guys well done.

He added: "Those kids are so brave. There is no way I would open my exam results on television.

"I sympathise with the kids doing their GCSe’s. I did my O-levels. I joined the local paper and was so glad I didn’t have to do another exam."

Richard also revealed that he only got 1% in his maths O-level exam - and that was for writing his name at the top.

More than 700,000 teenagers are receiving their results today, amid warnings that the new GCSEs demoralise struggling students.

Under England's exams overhaul, GCSEs have been toughened up, with less coursework, and all exams at the end of the two-year courses in the biggest shake-up of the end-of-school exams for a generation.
