Baffled Edinburgh residents poke fun at 'crime scene' Spaces for People zone

Baffled Edinburgh residents have been poking fun at one of the city's Spaces for People zones – likening it to a crime scene with chalk outline.

Dozens of people have been sharing their thoughts on the road layout on St John's Road, Corstorphone, after an image was shared online this week.

The photograph shows a small section of road featuring double red lines closed off by bollards for pedestrian use. The zone previously ran further down the road, but was shortened to allow easier access to the dental surgery on the corner of St John's Road and Victor Park Terrace.

Carol Craig said: "Yes that's for pedestrians to lie down and have a wee rest after they've hurt themselves bumping into all these stupid grey bollards."

Caroline Preston added: "Pedestrian and double red lines? No standing still?"

Lisa MacKinnon posted: "It's a cordoned off crime scene as that little dude has clearly been run over."

Stacey Shepherd said: "It's mandatory to stop and dab there then carry on with your day."

Julie Ranaldi-Hall commented: "Where are the delivery drivers supposed to stop to offload produce to shops etc?? Crazy."

Tommy Gallagher described the zone as a "new pilot waiting area for the dental surgery" where people can "pace up and down in safety".

The City of Edinburgh Council say the area allows for people to have more space when queuing for the nearby dental surgery, and to assist with safer crossing of the road.

A spokesperson said: "This was originally a continuous widened footway to provide pedestrians additional space to physically distance safely. However, in response to concerns from the local dentist, we agreed to reinstate a loading bay to allow elderly and disabled people to be dropped off and for loading. All Spaces for People schemes are open to amendments like this where needed, due to their temporary nature.

“The remaining section of widened footway has been retained to give space around queueing for the dental surgery and for safer crossing of the road.”

Edinburgh's Spaces for People scheme has split opinion among the city's residents since its introduction.

Earlier this month it was reported how residents had been expressing anger at measures such as a "floating parking bay" which forced traffic into the middle of the road on Longstone Road, between Kingsknowe Road North and the Murrayburn Road roundabout.
