BAE to recruit 800 new apprentices with East Yorkshire roles available

BAE has announced plans to recruit more than 800 new apprentices in 2020.

The company, which has a site in Brough in East Yorkshire, said the majority of its new recruits would join BAE’s air and maritime sectors – helping develop future technologies for the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy.

Almost 250 of the 800 planned apprenticeships fall under BAE’s air division – the area of the business its Brough site is best known for.

Three different types of apprenticeship are being offered at Brough, spanning from engineering technicians to software engineers.

Charles Woodburn, chief executive at BAE Systems, said: “Our apprentices are the lifeblood of our business.

“I’m incredibly proud of the significant contribution they make to the design and delivery of our most complex products, equipment and services, helping to ensure we remain at the forefront of technology and innovation and safeguard our national security for decades to come.

“As technology and our workplace evolves, it’s critical that we continue to invest in training the next generation of engineers and leaders.

“By working alongside industry peers, government and the education sector, we can ensure we are ready to respond to complex challenges of the future.”

Roles available at BAE’s Brough site cover advanced and degree apprenticeships.

An advanced apprenticeship course is being offered to train as an engineering technician.

Engineering technicians at BAE are involved in highly skilled work, and experience is available in areas including design engineering, systems engineering and manufacturing engineering.

Applicants must have at least five GCSEs including maths, English and a science. Apprenticeships will generally lead to industry-recognised qualifications which are equivalent to an A-Level.

Two degree apprenticeships are also up for grabs in East Yorkshire.

First is an aerospace engineering degree apprenticeship. The five-year scheme covers a wide range of areas and disciplines within BAE Systems’ air sector.

Successful candidates will study towards a BEng (Hons) degree in aerospace engineering, a Level Two diploma in aerospace and aviation engineering and a Level Four diploma in engineering and advanced manufacturing.

The other degree apprenticeship covers software engineering, and is a four-year course.

Khadijah Ismail, a current engineering degree apprentice in BAE’s air sector, said: “There are many benefits to undertaking an apprenticeship, from gaining years of credible, on-the-job engineering experience, to some that are more personal. For example, helping me to more confidently offer my views in the workplace.

“Most significantly, my apprenticeship has allowed me to work alongside and learn from senior engineers and leaders from across our business.

“The opportunity I have to interact with different people and the exposure I have to a wide range of experiences is undoubtedly helping my development and shaping my future career prospects.”

BAE announced in 2018 a £100m investment into education, skills and careers.

The company currently has around 2,000 apprentices across the UK, with around 95 per cent of learners going on to secure full-time jobs.

The apprenticeship recruitment window is open now and will run until February 28, 2020.
