Badminton duo serve up smashing displays at Lanarkshire Championships

Badminton ace Alfie Martin took home two titles from the Lanarkshire Schools Championships – with partner Ryan Jacobs helping him claim the boys’ doubles crown.

The Our Lady of Lourdes pair claimed the doubles title before nine-year-old Alfie went on to claim the singles crown, defending the two titles he won at last year’s event.

Their success helped them qualify for the Scottish Schools Championships, but that event has now been cancelled due to coronavirus.

Alfie, whose seven-year-old partner Ryan was competing in his first championships, said: “ I’m really happy about winning the titles and I’m feeling really positive that all my training has paid off.

“My performance was very good.

“I enjoyed playing with Ryan, encouraging him and supporting his game, as this was his first championships and only his third event.”
