Badminton building advised to flatten after collapse

The Engineering Institute of Thailand (EIT) has recommended the demolition of a collapsed badminton court building because of severe damage to the structure.

Institute president Thanes Weerasiri offered the advice to the operators of NP Court on the grounds that repairs to the deeply-cracked structure would be too costly.

The decision rested in the owners' hands, he added.

The two-storey sport complex in Muang district in Nonthaburi crumbled on Tuesday due to strong winds. No-one was inside at the time.

Debris from the collapse damaged six houses nearby and injured three occupants. More than 10 vehicles parked near the building were damaged. 

NP Court is a practice facility for national badminton player Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk but he was away competing in the Korea Open at the time.

NP Court owner, Suwat Nienprem, said after the EIT inspection that he agreed with the recommendation to demolish the building for safety reasons, Matichon Online reported.
