Badly injured Rover Way horse left in pain after DIY treatment

A badly injured horse with lacerations and eye ulcers had been left suffering with a botched DIY treatment.

The RSPCA was called to Rover Way in Cardiff after reports of an injured skewbald stallion was made.

The horse, which was 15-hands high, had ulcers in both eyes, lacerations to his body and was lame on his left hide.

He had been left roaming the streets and was clearly lethargic and in great pain and discomfort.

In a poor attempt to treat the 15-year-old stallion's injuries, he had been sprayed with iodine but a lack of proper veterinary attention would have caused him immense pain.

RSPCA inspector Simon Evans said: "Some poor DIY attempts had been made to treat this horse, including the use of iodine spray to wounds on the flanks but it is simply not good enough. This horse desperately needed to see a vet - but instead he has been given makeshift treatment and left to roam the streets.

"His injuries are bad and he clearly needed urgent veterinary care - and that is something the owner seems to have not ensured; which is clearly a dereliction of their duty to this animal."

An investigation has been launched into how the horse, which is now in RSPCA care, sustained his injuries and who was responsible for his poor treatment.
