Bad weather can't stop traders at Kirkcudbright's festive farmers' market

A festive farmers market took place in Kirkcudbright on Saturday.

Traders and customers braved the horrendous rain to buy some locally produced goodies ahead of the festive period.

And Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities chairman John Blaikie admitted: “In hindsight we should have cancelled it as the wind was perhaps a bit too strong but we don’t like cancelling events.

“The town was busy, people were about but they just don’t like hanging around.

“Some of the stall holders went away happy but we ended up finishing an hour earlier.”

Despite Saturday’s weather-related issues, the markets have been a success since the end of lockdown as folk are keen to get out and about.

John added: “We have the biggest farmers market in Dumfries and Galloway.

“Something we’ve not been able to do since lockdown ended was have the crafters back but we’ve managed to get some funding for some new gazebos. It’s important as, for a lot of them, it’s their only outlet so hopefully we can have them back at the next market in March.

“We had the kite festival and the food festival and we have been going round the streets this week with Santa. Next year is our 50th anniversary and we have a lot planned – hopefully it can all go ahead.”
