Bad storms wreak havoc

Several provinces in the Northeast and Central Plains were hit by summer wind and hail storms on Monday night which downed many large trees and power poles, and damaged buildings.

In the Northeast, at least 75 houses, one temple and a school in tambon Phutthaisong of Buri Ram's Phutthaisong district were badly damaged when they were struck by the storm, said Nimit Patthamacharoen, district office chief. The powerful winds took some houses over 30 metres away from their foundations.

More than 100 houses in Wachira Banrami district of the central Phichit province were damaged, said district chief Thanabodin Setthasuwan.

In Phitsanulok, the storms also tore apart several billboards in Muang and Bang Rakam districts, while downed power poles and branches fell onto wrecked tents at a food festival in Muang district, sending festival participants running for cover.

In Uthai Thani, also in the Central Plains, at least 25 houses, a temple and a school were damaged in tambon Rabam in Lan Sak district, said Anuphan Sarasuwan, the kamnan.
