While rumours persist that Idris Elba might be taking on the role of 007 once Daniel Craig has left the franchise, new word suggests that the star of The Wire might be attached to another blockbuster series.
Sources have informed Variety that the 42-year-old actor is in early talks to become the main villain in Star Trek 3. The third film of the rebooted saga will be directed by Justin Lin, best known for Fast & Furious 6, who is taking over from JJ Abrams, who will be producing this time.
Further details on exactly what villain Elba might play are being kept under wraps. In Star Trek Into Darkness, the exact identity of Benedict Cumberbatch’s dastardly character remained secret until the release. Last month saw a rumour about Bryan Cranston taking on the role as well as a suggestion that three strong female roles were also up for grabs.
If he were to join the cast then he’d star alongside returning actors Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin and Simon Pegg, who is co-writing the script with Doug Jung.
It follow news that Elba is also set to star in the new film from Harmony Korine. He will also be seen in the Netflix-acquired drama Beasts of No Nation and upcoming action thriller Bastille Day.
