'Bad batting, poor shot selection': Shubman Gill after Gujarat Titans' disastrous show leads to lowest IPL 2024 total

NEW DELHI: Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill expressed profound disappointment following his team's abysmal batting performance, resulting in the lowest total of the IPL 2024 season.

The Gujarat-based franchise faltered against the Delhi Capitals at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, managing a mere 89 runs before being bundled out in 17.3 overs. To compound their misery, DC chased down the target with ease, reaching 90 in just 8.4 overs with six wickets in hand.

Gill, speaking at the post-match presentation, refrained from attributing the dismal performance to the pitch conditions, instead directing attention to the poor shot selection by his team's batters.

"Our batting performance was very average," lamented Gill, who himself was dismissed for a meager 8 runs. He remarked, "I think the wicket was alright, to be honest... Just a bad batting performance and poor shot selection, I would say."

This marked the second instance in the IPL 2024 season where GT's batting lineup crumbled under pressure, reminiscent of their earlier collapse against the Lucknow Super Giants. Gill acknowledged the consequential challenge posed to their bowlers, asserting, "When the opposition are chasing 89, unless someone takes a double hat-trick, the opposition will always be in the game."

The defeat plummeted GT to the seventh position in the IPL 2024 points table, with only three wins from seven matches. In contrast, DC's dominant victory propelled them to the sixth spot, courtesy of a significant net run rate boost achieved by wrapping up the match within nine overs.

Despite the setback, Gill remained optimistic, stating, "This is just the halfway mark of the season for us... hopefully we win another 5-6 from the next 7 like in the last couple of years."
