'Bad batch of dangerous drug Lyrica' flooding Dublin streets as four people using homeless services found dead

A bad batch of a dangerous drug is said to be flooding the streets of Dublin as four people using homeless services have died in as many weeks.

A lethal version of Lyrica, which is used to treat epilepsy, neuropathic pain and generalised anxiety disorder, is said to be in circulation at the moment with fears rising about its usage in the city.

Over the weekend alone, two people who were availing of homeless facility services were found dead.

The source told Dublin Live that it is not known whether the deaths are linked to the bad drug batch but it is cause for concern.

They said: "There's understood to be a bad batch of Lyrica on the streets.

"It's known to cause a high like benzos but can leave people disorientated.

"It's not known for sure if this was related to these deaths but it's still a major concern as it continues to flood out streets.

On Sunday, the body of a man in his early 50s was removed from a facility while on Saturday, the body of a woman was sadly discovered in homeless accommodation.

Inner City Helping Homeless' CEO and Dublin city councillor Anthony Flynn sent thoughts and prayers to both families affected saying "we must do more".

He also called for the speeding up of a report due from the Minister for Housing on deaths within Ireland's homeless services.

A garda spokesman told Dublin Live: "Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances of the discovery of a body of a woman at an apartment on North William Street, Dublin 1 yesterday evening, 3 April 2021. The body of the deceased has been removed to Dublin City Mortuary."

On March 22, the body of a young woman in her 20s was also found in homeless accommodation in Ballybough.

And just two days previous, the body of a man was discovered on Saturday morning at 7.30am at a hostel on Ellis Quay along the River Liffey.
