Pillows. Every night, hair, dandruff and other sweaty nasties seep into the pillow making it a true dreamland for bacteria and fungus. Bleugh! “To extend the lifespan of your pillows, wash it every three months at 30 degrees on fine wash in the washing machine. After three years, it is time for a new one, though!”[Photo: Getty]

On World Sleep Day, figures have revealed that nearly 70% of people do not change their bed sheets on weekly basis, even though more than half (52%) admit they know they should.

Two-thirds of people who partook in the “Dream Survey” conducted by bed seller "Dreams", do not know that dirty beds can cause allergies, diseases, and viruses (68%), while less than the third take a shower at night before bedtime (29%), and 26% prefer to sleep naked.

The strangest survey results were that 57% of the participants eat in beds, and their favorite snack is chocolate, while 19% said they eat toast.

However, humans are not the only cause behind spreading bacteria in beds. It was found that 26% of Brits allow pets to sleep beside them every night.

The survey showed that 68% of Brits clean their kitchens more than their bedrooms, and that 62% of them sweep their houses more than they change bedsheets.

The survey also found that 67% wash bedsheets at temperatures of 30-40 degrees Celsius, although the temperature required to kill dangerous bacteria is 60 degrees Celsius.

The Dream Survey figures showed that 37% had never cleaned their mattresses and 24% refuse to dry-clean the quilts.

Finally, 27% admitted that they didn’t replace the pillows after three years of use, and 22% said they didn’t buy new mattresses after eight years.
