Backworth woman who smuggled drugs into prison in her bra walks free

A woman who smuggled drugs into prison in her bra during a visit has walked free from court.

Sharon Kelly put the contraband on a table while visiting a friend in HMP Northmberland and he was seen to pick it up.

It contained 25 buprenorphone - a heroin substitute - and 6.47g of cannabis resin, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

Kelly, 51, of Stretton Way, Backworth, North Tyneside, pleaded guilty to conveying a banned article into prison on July 3 2019.

She admitted it on the basis she was intimidated into doing it and received no payment for doing so.

Judge Robert Adams sentenced her to a community order for 18 months with rehabilitation.

The court heard Kelly has two previous convictions - conspiracy to cause actual bodily harm in 2008, for which she got a community order which she breached in 2009.

She has post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression and was vulnerable to exploitation, the court heard.

Ian Hudson, defending, said: "She's vulnerable.

"She was living alone, recovering from her son's suicide.

"There was intimidation against a background of vulnerability."

He added that she has taken steps to have bereavement counselling.
