Recycling centre closes after man trapped in skip

A recycling centre had to be closed after one of its workers became trapped in a large skip.

Fire crews were called to Backwell Recycling Centre at just before 2pm on Saturday, August 1, after reports a member of staff had become trapped in one of the large waste bins.

It is understood the man had been in the skip trying to flatten down the rubbish when he lost his footing and slipped.

He then became stuck in the skip unable to get out.

The recycling centre was closed while emergency crews attended to help the worker out.

Crews placed a ladder into the skip to help the man climb out. He was uninjured.

A spokesman for Avon Fire and Rescue said: “At 13:44pm on Saturday, crews from Nailsea and Weston fire stations were mobilised to reports of a trapped male on Church Town in Backwell.

“On arrival, crews found one male trapped in a rubbish skip.

“ Firefighters rescued the man using safe working at height.

“The casualties was handed to ambulance crews at the scene.”

The recycling centre, run by Biffa, re-opened later in the day.
