Backup linebacker, special teamer Neville Hewitt sticking with Jets

Wednesday was a rough day for the Jets special teams — Jason Myers signed with the Seahawks and Andre Roberts signed with the Bills — but the unit is keeping one piece of Brant Boyer’s puzzle.

New York has an agreement in place with backup linebacker Neville Hewitt, according to multiple reports. He’ll get a one-year deal to stay with the Jets.

Neville first came to the Jets as a free agent last offseason, signing a one-year deal after spending the first three years of his career as a member of the Dolphins. He spent two of those years playing under Adam Gase in Miami.

Hewitt’s first season with the Jets went well, as the inside linebacker played in all 16 games while recording 39 tackles, 1.5 sacks and four QB hits in a limited backup role. He made his living on special teams, though, playing 57.06 percent of New York’s third phase snaps.

While the Jets have been making big splashes in free agency, they’ve also made sure to re-sign a few of their depth pieces. Hewitt is the latest, joining CB Darryl Roberts and OL Jonotthan Harrison. Hewitt is the second special teams star the Jets have locked up this offseason; they also agreed to a deal with ex-Bears WR/gunner Josh Bellamy.
