Backpacker, 20, on 'dream trip' stranded in remote Australian hostel in coronavirus lockdown

A backpacker is currently stranded in a remote part of Australia after the borders were shut due to coronavirus lockdown rules.

Chloe Watson is one of Merseyside's most upcoming boxers, and recently decided to take a gap year, travelling Down Under for 12 months.

The 20-year-old - with a junior Commonwealth gold medal under her belt -flew to Australia on March 5, but her dream trip was dramatically interrupted when the impact of Covid-19 began to hit.

It meant she has ended up in a remote spot in Arrawarra in New South Wales, living temporarily in Spot X Surf, on the coast.

Chloe, who trains at the Birkenhead Venture club, had hopes of flying back home to her family in the Wirral last week.

But those plans were dashed as Australia, like all countries across the world, shut its borders.

With flights grounded, it is not known how long the 20-year-old, who is travelling alone, will remain in Australia and is struggling to stay in contact with family due to the timezone differences and bad internet connection.

But where possible, they hold Skype conversations with the boxing ace, who was crowned England Youth National Champion in 2017.

Gran Marie Burns, 64, who lives in Spain, said: "Chloe is obsessed with boxing and has dedicated much of her life to the sport.

"Her goal is to represent Great Britain in the 2024 Olympics.

"As a youth, she has done so well in the ring.

"We worry about her, but we've seen photos of her surfing, and it's looks like a nice place to be."

Chloe has paid up to £2,500 for accommodation at the surfing hostel for the next 12 weeks, her family said, and praised the centre for keeping those living there busy.

But they are fearful even Spot X Surf might have to close due to the pandemic.

Back home in Birkenhead, mum Tammy, 39, told the ECHO: "It's a worry, I'm not getting much sleep.

"My anxiety is through the roof as I just want her home.

"Chloe is upbeat and is asking us not to panic.

"It's impossible to know how long she'll be there for."

Chloe is a big favourite at Birkenhead Venture where she’s boxed since first donning the gloves as a 10-year-old.

Her coach previously described her as a "dedicated workhouse."

She has represented England in the Three Nations Championships and in one of her first senior Great Britain fights, scooped a silver medal.

Six days ago, she told her friends: "So the coronavirus has changed my plans so much this week.

"From going home to not going home, to going on flights to them then being cancelled, and finally to staying.

"I could think of worse places to be stuck.

"Making the most of any situation, trying to learn as many new things as possible, while keeping social distancing, of course.

"Stay safe everyone."
