Backlash for John Cleese over London 'is no longer an English city' tweet

John Cleese has received a huge backlash over a tweet he posted today where he describes London as "not really an English city any more".

The former Monty Python actor tweeted: "Virtually all my friends from abroad have confirmed my observation. So there must be some truth in it..."

Users have hit out at the TV star, as well as the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, who said: "These comments make John Cleese sound like he's in character as Basil Fawlty."

"Londoners know that our diversity is our greatest strength. We are proudly the English capital, a European city and a global hub."

Cleese's tweet also acknowledged the latest Brexit referendum results, adding: "I note also that London was the UK city that voted most strongly to remain in the EU."

Twitter users were quick to point out that Cleese lives abroad in the Caribbean.

Following Cleese's initial tweet, he then posted a further tweet saying: "I suspect I should apologise for my affection for the Englishness of my upbringing," before directly responding to users denying that his comments were about race.

However the 79-year-old also received praise for sharing his opinions of the capital, with the official Leave EU Twitter account writing: "Bravo to British comedy legend and Brexiteer @JohnCleese for speaking up about the state of London."

The comedian made headlines eight years ago for saying similar remarks regarding the capital, and that 'English culture' was disappearing.

Cleese moved to the island of Nevis in the Caribbean last November, after reportedly being "so disappointed with so much about this country".
