A MONTH ago it seemed a long way off. Now the Knights are one training session closer to attempting to extend their unbeaten 2020 run.

The team returned to the paddock at Mayfield on Wednesday morning as part of the effort to have NRL matches back on the calendar this month.

Their return follows the New Zealand Warriors chartering a flight into Tamworth for an indefinite stay that will allow them to take part in the premiership.

The Melbourne Storm have also shifted to Albury, where they were forced to run drills on a private sportsground after opposition from the council.

Newcastle kicked off their season with victories over New Zealand and Wests Tigers in the opening two rounds, one of which was played before an empty stadium in the NRL's first suite of measures designed to keep play going.

Coach Adam O'Brien has said the players understand they will be under intense scrutiny as rugby league returns given the widespread lockdowns still in place due to coronavirus.
