'Back to Sunderland!' - Newcastle United sent transfer message over Nottingham Forest favourite

Newcastle United fans have been discussing the club's decision to tell former Nottingham Forest star Jack Colback not to return to training.

According to NottinghamshireLive's sister title in the north-east, ChronicleLive, Colback is set to be released by the St James' Park side when his contract concludes at the end of the month.

Colback and Jamie Sterry haven't trained since Premier League clubs were called back in to prepare for the return of the top flight in a couple of weekends' time after a break because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The former spent 18 months on loan at the City Ground, initially joining until the end of the 2017-18 campaign before signing up for the entirety of the following season for former Reds boss Aitor Karanka.

Reds fans have made it clear that they would like to see Colback return to Trentside, with current head coach Sabri Lamouchi favouring a two-man midfield with current first-choice duo Ben Watson and Samba Sow occupying the roles.

Watson turns 35 next month and Colback could be a good replacement should the former Watford man move on.

Newcastle fans, meanwhile, are glad to see the back of Colback with the club on the verge of a £300 million takeover by a fund backed by Saudi Arabia.

"No big miss then," one said.

"Finally got rid of Colback," said another.

"Excellent," a third added.

"Colback is being released about five years too late," said another.

A fifth added: "Colback should go back to Sunderland," while another said: "Colback should have gone years ago."
