Back to school in Scotland: latest update expected today

Education Secretary John Swinney is expected to make a statement later today on the reopening of schools this summer.

The Deputy First Minister will give an update to MSPs at 2pm on whether children will see a full-time return to the classroom on August 11.

His statement is expected to update families on measures being taken to ensure a the safety of pupils and staff, including testing.

It comes after the Scottish Government reversed plans for a blended learning approach to schooling after the summer, with a combination of classroom and home learning.

A final decision on whether children will be sent back to school full-time will be made by July 30 - two weeks before pupils are expected to return to classrooms.

The Government also announced that if the current suppression of coronavirus in Scotland continues, then children will not need to wear face masks or physically distance when schools return.

In a paper published last week, government advisors insists evidence suggests no distancing is required in primary schools.

And despite, pointing out it's less clear for older pupils, they advise the same approach in secondary schools.

However, Mr Swinney has warned that all decisions are entirely dependent on the public complying with guidelines, hygiene and social distancing rules.
