Back to school in Scotland: date set for final decision

A final decision will be made on reopening Scotland's schools next week.

Education Minister John Swinney broke the news at the Scottish Government's daily briefing today.

He confirmed that kids will find out on Thursday, July 30 if they are to return to the classroom full-time as hoped on August 11.

He also committed to making a statement in the Scottish Parliament tomorrow, updating families on measure being taken to ensure a the safety of pupils and staff, including testing.

The announcement comes just five days after it was revealed that the majority of children shouldn't need to wear face masks or socially distance at when they finally return to school.

But Mr Swinney warned that all changes are entirely dependent on the public complying with hygiene and social distancing rules.

He said: "We will only be able to achieve this if we continue to suppress the virus."
