Back to school for Oran Kearney after Europa League heroics

Oran Kearney was back on the school beat on Friday morning following Coleraine's heroics in Europe.

The Bannsiders boss returned home from Slovenia in the early hours, and by 8.30am he was back on playground patrol at Cross and Passion College in Ballycastle where he works as a PE teacher.

It was a rollercoaster 24 hours for Kearney, whose Coleraine caused a massive Europa League shock by beating NK Maribor on penalties.

Cross and Passion shared a photograph of Kearney back in the school playground on Friday morning.

And principal Paul McClean says the whole school was "immensely proud" of Kearney following Coleraine's shock win in Slovenia.

"Oran texted me at 5am and said he would be in school for 8.30am, which is some going," Mr McClean said.

"But it says a lot about Oran and the person he is.

"Coleraine did fantastically well on Thursday night. It was a great result and night for the Irish League.

"A lot of the staff members watched the game on the BBC website and we were all texting each other. And the longer the game went on the more excited we got.

"To beat a team of Maribor's calibre is a fantastic achievement and brilliant for Coleraine Football Club. We are looking forward to the draw for the next round now."

Mr McClean added: "Oran Kearney is a gentleman. He is a credit to himself and his club, and also to Cross and Passion College.

"He has always been so professional and never allowed football to impact on his job here."

Kearney is now into his 19th year at Cross and Passion College after starting with the school in 2002.

He took one career break when he joined Scottish club St Mirren in September 2018, before returning the following summer.

"When Oran's journey with St Mirren ended he came back and it was as if he was never away," Mr McClean added.

"I suppose our main worry after last night is that another big job will come up for Oran!

"Oran goes above and beyond what is required and is a massive influence on the young people at the school.

"He is definitely a role model. He is highly regarded as a teacher and a football manager."
