Names like Blisterz, Kid Bif and Van G might lead you to believe that the Trix dancers have qualifications in street cred. Wrong. In this performance of Back Spin, it looks like they're playing at it. Edinburgh is a long way from the source of hip-hop, body-popping and other fast-spinning grooves, and it seems that neither the physical nor imaginative gaps have been narrowed by this crew.
Bodies jump on and off stage in singlets and T-shirts. They get down on their hands, and even their backs a few times, but never is gravity remotely challenged. Occasionally, the performers manage to work together, but even straightforward moves seem beyond the technical ability of certain members. They are into it, but without a semblance of the excellence that lifted these techniques off the street and onto the stage in the first place.
In this low-ceilinged place, atmospheric though it is, the dance is heavy and the soundtrack hollow. The choreography is a chaotic melange of samey moves that, when something different is attempted, collapse through lack of discipline and style. The show's promise to "blow your senses" just doesn't match the action.
