Bachelorette Angie Kent says former Noosa councillor's behaviour 'proof' men need to change

The past star of The Bachelorette who endured sexually inappropriate comments from a former Noosa councillor says his explanations for his behaviour show many men need to do better.

Sunshine Coast local Angie Kent appeared in the 2019 season of The Bachelorette, in which serving Noosa Shire councillor Jess Glasgow was a contestant vying for her heart.

But Mr Glasgow lasted less than two episodes after making crude and sexist comments to Ms Kent and other contestants.

Last week, Mr Glasgow was hit with about $5,000 in fines and legal fees from the Councillor Conduct Tribunal, which found his behaviour was so reckless, it would have recommended he be sacked if he had not already lost his seat in last year's election.

On the same day, he said he would appeal the ruling because there was "no evidence to back this up", blaming his apparently poor behaviour on being "edited majorly".

'Men in general'

On Wednesday afternoon Ms Kent told the ABC his claims were "completely false".

"I know editing can be hardcore and especially in such a vulnerable situation," she said,

She said his behaviour and comments on the show still made her feel "angry and embarrassed".

"But in a way blessed, because it has given me the chance to really speak my truth now," Ms Kent said.

'S*** needs to change'

Last week, Mr Glasgow defended his comments on the show.

He referred to a scene where he was talking about Ms Kent, saying he "would've just grabbed that sweetie and laid one on her" and "I've kissed plenty of girls who've turned their heads before".

"Is that a bad thing to say? To say, 'Look, I like a woman, and I think she's great, and I would have kissed her?'" he said.

"Is that really a bad thing to say?"

Ms Kent said no man should be able to force themselves on a woman simply because they want to.

"That alone is just outstanding evidence that shit needs to change," she said.

"If you're forcing yourself on quote unquote 'plenty of girls' and you haven't learnt that you're the problem?

In her social media posts earlier on Tuesday night, Ms Kent said Mr Glasgow couldn't blame the show's production for what appeared on screen.

"If it was hugely edited, then why did I feel so embarrassed and humiliated?" she said.

"Why did other men on the show seem to have quite the issue with him, and members of the crew?

"And why have I had fathers, mothers, friends reach out to me saying it didn't sit right with them either?"

'Collateral damage for male ego'

Ms Kent said her comments were not only aimed at Mr Glasgow, but at growing calls for men to be more responsible for their behaviour.

"Women are not collateral damage for the male ego," she said.

"When a whole group of people are screaming out and standing up and men keep blaming it on bad days or edits, perhaps it's time to listen and do the work within."

The Office of the Independent Assessor received 128 complaints from the public about Mr Glasgow's behaviour.

Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart, who was not part of the council when the episode aired, said the incident on the show "should never have occurred".

"It clearly undermined the good reputation of the shire and council," she said.

The council says it will pursue the fines and legal fees issued by the tribunal.
