Bachelor of Commerce cutoff above 99% in Chennai colleges

CHENNAI: More centums in commerce in Class XII state board exams has pushed the cut-off for BCom (general), the most preferred among students, above 99% in top colleges in the city this year.

The colleges have released the first selection list for various degree programmes while keeping the application open for CBSE Class XII students.

The cut-off marks increased by two marks to six marks for BCom in many colleges. Some colleges like Madras Christian College has 99.75% cut-off for OC category as more students from outside the state also got full marks in commerce stream this year.

To grant admissions, colleges would rank students based on the scores in four subjects other than English and Tamil. They would select the students based on the scores for out of 400 marks.

In DG Vaishnav College, the BCom general (shift-1) OC cut-off has increased to 99.25% (397) which is two marks more compared to last year. "This year there are more students with 400, 399, 398 cut-off marks compared to previous year. The cut-off for BC, MBC, SC category also increased by three marks to six marks. We will know the full trend after the release of CBSE Class XII results and government college admissions," said S Santhosh Baboo, principal of DG Vaishnav College.

However, the cut-off for other BCom courses such as BCom Bank Management is low with 320 marks while the second shift BCom general course is also having 380 marks as cut-off, he added. The college received more than 6000 applications against 490 BCom seats in aided and self-finance streams.

At Women's Christian College also BCom cut-off has increased to 99% this year. "The increase is mainly because of more students getting high marks in Class XII. Even in BC, the MBC cut-off is expected to be around 97% this year," said Lillian Jasper, principal of the college.

In MOP Vaishnav College for Women, the cut-off for BCom accounting and finance has increased to 99.75%.

"People are refusing to believe if we say the cut-off is 399 for the first shift," said Lalitha Balakrishnan, the principal. For the second shift, the cut-off is less due to more seats.

The cut-off for BCom courses has increased by five percent to 97% in Guru Nanak College this year compared to last year. "The increase is mainly because of more demand as we received 70 applications per seat in BCom," said M G Ragunathan, principal of the college.

S Selvakumar from Anandham Youth Foundation, who is conducting free career guidance programmes for students, said, the demand is more for BCom due to craze for CA among students.

"The cut-off is very high for top colleges alone. Seats are available in other colleges. However, those who do not get a BCom seat, can join other courses such as BSc statistics, BCA among others with better placements and career options," he added.
