Baby zebra born in first for Queensland

The foal was born to mum Zara and father Zinty on Monday night.

A Queensland zoo has made history, with an adorable new addition.

Darling Downs Zoo welcomed its first zebra foal this week, the first to be born in Queensland.

The baby arrived early on Tuesday morning and is already following its mum, Zara around the enclosure.

Zookeeper Stephanie Robinson said the baby was the first of two to be born, with keepers still waiting on another zebra.

"Equines are very difficult, because they can hold their babies for up to 15 or more months," she said.

"So you never know exactly when they're going to be due, which is a waiting game."

"We've been very impatient

"We actually thought Savannah was going to be the first to give birth."

The zoo imported the zebras from the United States back in 2014, after a long and gruelling process.

"There's not many zebras in Queensland and we also imported 10," she said.

"They are completely unrelated to all zebras in Queensland so they're very important for the breeding program.

"Traveling zebras is always tricky; it took six years of paperwork to get them into the country."

Ms Robinson said the new baby had yet to be named, as they still did not know the sex.

"We think it's a male but we haven't really picked him up to have a close look yet," she said.

The zoo has also welcomed other new baby animals this Spring, including a camel and antelope.
