Baby survives after mother shot to death on Chicago's Far South Side

CHICAGO _ A 35-year-old mother who was eight months pregnant with another child was fatally shot in the back early Tuesday on the Far South Side, but doctors were able to deliver her baby at the hospital, according to Chicago police.

Just after midnight, officers responded to an alert from the city's gunshot tracking system, ShotSpotter, for three gunshots in the 2100 block of East 95th Place in the Jeffery Manor neighborhood, police said. They found a woman lying on the side of her home, unresponsive, with several gunshot wounds to the back.

The woman later was identified as Stacey Jones, who was wounded on the same block where she lived, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Jones was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, police said. She was pronounced dead at 1 a.m. and doctors delivered her child.

The baby, who according to a law enforcement source was not struck by gunfire, was transferred to Comer Children's Hospital in critical condition, police said.

Jones has two other children who were found inside the home, unharmed, according to the source. Jones worked as a probation officer in the adult probation department, according a memo sent by chief judge Timothy C. Evans.

Jones, who has a valid concealed carry license, also was found to be carrying a loaded gun in her pocket.

When they arrived, police found that there was racist graffiti on Jones' home, but it did not appear to point toward a motive for the killing, authorities said.

"At this time, based on information and additional evidence gathered by detectives, we do not believe this crime was racially motivated or a random act," police spokesman Don Terry said in a statement.
