DETROIT _ Police have interviewed the baby sitter at a Dearborn home where a toddler shot two 3-year-old boys Wednesday and said they expect to consult with prosecutors later Thursday about the case.
The boys appeared to be injured from a single shot, police said. One boy was shot in the shoulder and the other boy suffered an injury to the face.
Both children injured in the shooting remain hospitalized at Children's Hospital of Michigan, Dearborn Police Lt. Gary Mann said.
"The young boy that was shot in shoulder is in stable condition _ expected to make a full recovery," he said. "And the other boy, who suffered the injury to the face, is in serious but stable condition."
The injured toddlers were not the homeowners' children, Mann said. Officials trained in forensic interviewing of children talked to toddlers who witnessed what happened, he said.
Police didn't release any information about how the handgun was stored or how the child got access to it. Nobody is in police custody currently in connection with the investigation, Mann said.
Prosecutors haven't received information on the case yet and no charging decision has been made in the case.
Children's Protective Services is involved in the case and the children that live in the home are staying with relatives, police said.
There were about six to eight kids in the home at the time of the shooting, including some of the homeowner's kids and children she cared for, police said.
"These are heartbreaking investigations," Mann said. "But they're not that difficult because it's not a whodunit."
