Baby nearly eaten alive by ants in garbage dump in Bareilly dies

BAREILLY: The premature baby who survived after he was found inside a garbage dump in Bareilly, covered by hundreds of ants for nearly eight hours, succumbed during treatment at a private hospital here on Friday.

Doctors said the baby was suffering from infection in the lungs, which were underdeveloped. He had shown signs of improvement but on Friday afternoon, his pulse dropped and he collapsed.

Police had earlier registered an FIR under IPC section 317 (exposure of a child under 12 years of age by parent or person having care of it with intention of wholly abandoning it) and now, the section of culpable homicide will be added to it. The latest development would mean that the maternal grandmother of the baby, who allegedly abandoned him a few hours after he was born, may be arrested.

The baby was born out of wedlock but the parents got married after a few community leaders intervened and got the couple to wed.

The couple then went to the hospital to see their son and decided to get him back. They gave an application to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) to get their baby back. While their application was under process, the baby, who survived against all odds, lost the battle of his life.
