Baby Lucia is first to be born in Renfrewshire in 2021

A couple are starting 2021 with a brand new bundle of joy after their daughter was the first to be born in Renfrewshire.

Miriam and Paddy welcomed baby Lucia in the early hours of New Year’s Day at 2.33am at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.

Weighing in at a healthy 7pd 1oz, she’s the first baby for the couple from Lochwinnoch and proud mum Miriam said she’d kept them waiting as she was due to be born on December 20.

“I think she was keen not to be involved in 2020,” joked Miriam. “She wanted to wait on till 2021.

“My parents live in London and they’d planned to come up for Christmas by which time we’d planned to be home with our baby but obviously none of that could happen."

The couple didn't know if they were having a boy or girl but had picked the girl's name Lucia, an Italian name which means light, as Miriam's mum's family is Italian.

Miriam said: "My husband was convinced we were having a boy, I thought we were having a girl.

"We had a few names picked but when we saw her we knew she was Lucia."

And the couple are delighted that Lucia will always have a special date to celebrate her birthday.

“There’s a lovely sense of hope in having a New Year baby," said Miriam.

“Because her name means light, everyone I’ve spoken to said she’s like a ray of light, a ray of hope.

“She is something for everyone to look forward to, there’s definitely a sense of that.”
