Baby killer stood by and 'said nothing' as mum 'begged' by daughter's hospital bed

The killer of a one-year-old baby girl reportedly stood by and said nothing as the child's mum "begged" at her daughter's hospital bed.

Hollie Ashurst was killed by her father Daniel while he was meant to be caring for her at the home he shared with fiance Leanne Thompson in Wigan.

While Ms Thompson was at work, Ashurst shook little Hollie so hard he left her with a "catalogue" of serious injuries before her devastated mum made the difficult decision to turn off her life support machine just days later.

Ashurst, 33, was jailed on Wednesday for 12 years after a jury found him guilty of manslaughter.

Now, Hollie's mum Leanne has spoke out on how she will never forgive the man she was due to marry.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News , 27-year-old Leanne said that he stood by and "said nothing" to her when she arrived at the hospital where Hollie had been taken after the attack on March 28, 2019.

Leanne was working at a beauty salon when she received a call from Ashurst to say that Hollie was ill and had been rushed to hospital.

She said: "It was awful. I slammed the phone down and ran as fast as I could.

"When I got to the hospital, it was horrendous.

"The paramedics actually stopped and asked if I was ready to see what I was going to see."

Hollie had suffered multiple bruises and cuts to the head and neck, bleeding to the brain and eyes and a broken ankle.

Leanne had wondered why police were waiting at Royal Manchester's Children Hospital when she arrived.

But while she kept a bedside vigil, frantically asking doctors questions about Hollie's condition, she says Ashurst was distant and quiet.

She said: "He stood far away from Hollie while I was begging at the side of her bed.

"He never put his arm around me or tried to reassured me. Something was not adding up, I knew he had done something.

"On one occasion, I asked him if he had injured Hollie and he never said anything."

When medical staff asked Ashurst what had happened earlier in the day, he gave differing and jumbled accounts.

He was arrested later at hospital on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm on Hollie, which changed to murder after following her death.

Sentencing Ashurst, a judge told him he had "extinguished" all of young Hollie's potential when he carried out the "lengthy and protracted sequence of assaults on her".

During the three-week trial, it was revealed that Ashurst had suffered with depression and anxiety for years and had told a mental health nurse he feared he would struggle to cope with Hollie when Leanne returned to work.

Leanne says that was the first she had heard of either piece of information.

She said she had no concerns about leaving Hollie with Ashurst.

She said: "He seemed to be really happy with Hollie.

"The times he did look after, he made out that they had had a really good time. We had the best relationship.

"I would never have thought he would hurt a child like that."

As Ashurst was led from the dock on Wednesday morning, shouts of "monster" and "baby killer" rained down from the public gallery.

Leanne has slammed Ashurst's sentence and stated that she will never forgive her ex-partner.

She added: "The sentence is nowhere near long enough.

"He will only serve five because he has already been in custody for a year.

"He will be walking free by the time he is 40. It is disgusting.

"He is the most horrible, vile man ever.

"I will never forgive him."

In a victim impact statement read out in court, she wrote about how she would never be the same again following the tragedy.

She revealed how she had felt unable to return to work and had been receiving counselling to help her cope with her grief.

She said: "I will always remember the good times with Hollie.

"That is how I have managed to get through each day.

"I try to remember all the good memories we had, and all the nice things we did together.

"We were so close. No one will ever take that away from us.

"She would come everywhere with me, we would do activities together, go to play groups.

"She was always by my side. I did everything - I washed her, dressed her, bathed her."
