Baby goat rescued from cliff edge after becoming separated from mum

Emergency crews were called to rescue a baby goat – who had become stuck on a ledge at Cheddar Gorge.

The RSPCA and crews from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue were alerted to the gorge after a member of the public heard it the goat's ‘haunting’ cries for help.

It was initially hoped the goat would be able to get himself out of his tricky predicament, but when he was still there two days later - and still crying for his mum - the team of animal rescuers began a mission to reunite them.

A specialist team from Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service worked alongside the animal rescue charity’s officers, using their specialist rescue skills and equipment to bring the goat to safety.

RSPCA animal collection cfficer Clara Scully said: “The rescue was a fantastic effort by all involved and we are so grateful to the firefighters for rescuing this poor goat and for the member of public who spotted him and helped to release him back to his mum.

“We suspect he had been chased and that’s how he ended up stuck and separated from his mother.

“He was standing on a tiny ledge and had been there for a while so he was struggling to get down by himself.”

The gorge, a popular tourist attraction, is unusually quiet during the current Coronavirus lockdown as people stay home.

It is home to a number of feral goats and Soay sheep, who were introduced in the 1990s to maintain grazing levels to promote the growth of wild flowers.
