Baby girl tragically drowned after falling headfirst into a bucket of water at home

A baby girl tragically drowned after falling headfirst into a bucket of water while her mum was doing the cleaning in Brazil.

The incident took place in the municipality of Jupi, in the north-eastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco on Sunday while the baby was at home with her mother and sister.

The little girl, Perola Isadora Cardoso, was reportedly found in the bucket of water by her mother, according to the police.

The baby girl, seen smiling in photographs with a ribbon in her hair, was taken to hospital by emergency workers but was pronounced dead on arrival, local media has reported.

The nursery where Perola was enrolled was devasted to hear the news and cancelled all daycare for that day.

It released a statement on social media saying: "The Municipality of Jupi regrets and expresses its deepest regret for the death of the little Perola Isadora, a student of Nursery 1 of Creche Tia Dora."

The police opened an investigation on Monday June 5, which is ongoing.

In the United States alone, over 275 young children have drowned in buckets since 1984, with unintentional drowning being the leading cause of death for children younger than five.

In 2021, a baby died after falling into a water bucket while his mum took a quick break from mopping the floor to answer the front door.

Joao Miguel is said to have toppled headfirst into the bucket when his mum, who was cleaning the house, went to talk to her nephew at the front gate.

According to Yahoo News, the tragedy occurred just one month before Joao's first birthday at their home in the city of Cariacica, also in Brazil.

The baby's aunt told the news portal G1: "She was tidying the house, mopping up. And the boy was in the pantry, on the floor, near the table.

"When she went in, she didn't see the boy. When she went to the kitchen, she saw the boy in the bucket of water."

Operators told them what to do over the phone but it was not possible to save the baby.

"She started to shout and I heard her cries asking me for help, saying he wasn't breathing," the aunt said.
