Baby girl tragically died after umbilical cord became wrapped round her neck

A baby girl died just 31 minutes after being born after the umbilical cord became wrapped round her neck.

The inquest into the death of baby Isobelle Kirk opened at Teesside Coroner's Court on Wednesday.

She was just 31 minutes old when she died at the University Hospital of North Tees, Teeside Live reported.

It was heard how issues were raised over the time it took for doctors to decide to perform an emergency C-section to try save Isobelle's life after her mother reported she had stopped moving.

Glenda Kirk, Isobel's mother, was 38 weeks pregnant and explained how her baby was usually "extremely active", but she became worried on the morning of September 21, 2018 and headed to the hospital in Stockton.

It was later discovered Isobelle had the umbilical cord looped around her neck and an emergency caesarean would need to be performed.

A post mortem examination concluded the cord would have caused impaired blood flow and gave a cause of death as fetal hypoxia - a lack of oxygen to the baby.

Glenda Kirk told the inquest how she awoke that day and "she (Isobelle) didn't seem to be as strong in the way she moved".

She attended the hospital "as I was concerned, I told the midwife I had not felt baby move since I woke".

The baby's movements were described as "erratic" and Ms Kirk said she wasn't told to prepare for an emergency caesarean until she was being taken for it.

She said: "I was just sort of bounced down the corridor.

"I kept asking them what was going on and if my baby was OK."

One of the issues raised at the inquest centres around the timing of the birth and if the C-section could have been performed sooner.

The inquest, sitting at Teesside Magistrates' Court in Middlesbrough, is expected to last three days.
