Baby girl dies of overdose after 'parents give her cocaine and heroin'

A two-month-old baby girl died after her parents allowed her to have heroin and cocaine, police say.

Eugene Chandler, 27, and Shaleigh Brumfield, 26, were charged over the death of their baby daughter Marleigh Chandler on Tuesday

The parents were arrested seven months after the girl's lifeless body was found by police at their home in Danville, Virginia on November 24, 2018.

Officers responded to a 999 call at their residence and performed CPR on little Marleigh.

She was then rushed to the SOVAH Health emergency room but was later pronounced dead.

Eugene Chandler, 27, was also charged over the death of his daughter Marleigh (Danville Police)

At the time of her death police said there were no signs of physical abuse.

However, a post-mortem later revealed Marleigh died of "acute heroin and cocaine intoxication in a setting of co-sleeping".

Danville Police Lieutenant Richard Chivvis said: "The child had enough cocaine and heroin metabolites in her system to kill her."

On Monday, Brumfield and Chandler were charged with felony homicide and neglect of a child.

They are being held in Danville City jail without bail ahead of their trial.
