Baby girl dies hours after parents told she could start new cancer treatment

A baby girl died hours after her parents learned that approval had been given for her to start new cancer treatment.

Little Jessica Gibson lost her fight for life last week, leaving mum Gillian and dad Andrew heartbroken.

The nine-month-old, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour just a few months ago, was due to be given Trametinib - a cancer growth blocker, which targets proteins and slows down the growth of harmful cells, the Daily Record reports.

Gillian, 36, had initially taken to Facebook to speak of her joy being told the news, telling followers: She wrote: "Jessica's oncologist called last night to say that Novartis has approved her application for Trametinib.

"I can't explain how happy we are - it's the best news.

"Now we just have to wait for Novartis to send the medicine and hope it's sooner rather than later.

"Best early Christmas present ever."

But sadly the East Kilbride mum revealed the tragic news that little Jessica had passed away, just months after she was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Gillian said: "Our amazing little princess Jessica passed away.

"As with everything and in true 'Jessica style' this surprised us all and we are all completely heartbroken.

"We all love you so much baby girl and not a minute will pass that we don't think about you."

Little Jessica was diagnosed with pilocytic astrocytoma in July - a tumour of the brain and spinal cord - when she was just four months old, after Gillian and dad Andrew, 49, became concerned when her right eye began rapidly moving from side to side.

An initial GP referral to the hospital led to a three or four-month wait for an MRI scan but soon after Jessica's weight started to drop and she was admitted to Wishaw General Hospital in Lanarkshire on July 29.

She was then taken for an emergency MRI scan at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow, where her parents were told there was a large mass in Jessica's brain and smaller tumours on her spine.

Jessica then endured five operations, three types of chemotherapy and spent lengthy spells in hospital.

But on November 10 doctors decided she was too weak for any more surgery or chemotherapy and was sent home from hospital in an ambulance for palliative care.
