The mystery over a 'dead dog' whose collar was found ‘tied to a tree’ at a former Scots coal mine has been solved.
An animal rescue group has confirmed that the decaying remains discovered at the St Ninian’s opencast mine in Fife actually belong to a baby fox.
Fears were raised after a collar was found attached to a tree at the secluded spot by a concerned member of the public on Sunday.
They feared that the remains were that of a light brown coloured pooch who may have been wearing the Barkley and Fetch neckband.

Dana’s Angels Fife have since attended at the scene and confirmed the remains do not belong to a pet.
They said: “Regarding the deceased animal at St Ninians opencast mine in Fife. We have been along to check and can confirm it’s a baby fox that has decayed.
“The collar found near the animal has been left on the main gate if it belongs to someone. It looks like the collar was placed near the dead animal as a marker point
“And to also clarify, the tree that the collar was on is under a foot high. It was a teeny little start of a Xmas tree.
“Rip wee foxy.”
