Baby found in upstate NY home where mother, grandmother were shot dead

NEW YORK _ A baby girl was discovered inside an upstate New York home where the child's mother and grandmother were shot and killed, authorities said Tuesday.

The bodies were found after police received a call around 7 a.m. about a baby crying and possible gunshots being heard at the house on Lake Road in Valley Cottage, authorities said.

The women, a 63-year-old and her 27-year-old daughter, were found in the back of the home, Clarkstown police said. Both suffered gunshot wounds.

No other details about the victims, including their names, have been released.

The 27-year-old victim's baby was discovered inside the house, but the girl was unharmed, cops said.

"The child was transported to a local hospital for evaluation," police said in a statement posted to Facebook. "We are in the process of notifying the next of kin."

Authorities were speaking to a male person of interest in the case, but police refused to offer details about him or his relationship to the victims. No charges have been filed.

"This area in Valley Cottage is normally a very, very quiet area," Clarkstown Police Department Chief Ray McCullagh said during a news conference. "We rarely, rarely respond to calls there. This is very out of the ordinary for that location."
