Baby found in stolen car

The mother of a 14-month-old girl found abandoned in a stolen car after a police chase south of Brisbane overnight has come forward to police.

Police say the girl was found in a car that had been left outside a vacant house in Slacks Creek just after 10:00pm AEST.

The driver fled and left the infant behind.

Police say the stolen car had earlier been spotted on Queens Road and had been pursued by officers.

Paramedics say the child was unharmed but was taken to Logan Hospital for a check-up

Superintendent Noel Powers says the baby remains in care and a search is continuing for the male driver.

"We're actually working with children's services to be able to sort of establish the facts - what happened, how the child came to be in this young man's custody," he said.

"I do believe there is a relationship there too, so obviously that's something we need to have a look at.

"We'll work with child services to get to the bottom of it and at this stage the welfare of the child is really the one at the forefront of this."
