A baby was found dead at a UK prison after an inmate allegedly gave birth alone in her cell.
A police investigation into the "unexplained" death at HMP Bronzefield, Britain's largest female prison, has been launched.
Vicky Robinson, director of the prison, confirmed that a woman gave birth at the prison last Friday, but the baby did not survive, the Mirror reports.
The woman had been at an advanced stage of pregnancy and went into labour in her cell in the early hours, according to The Guardian.
The prison houses a mother and baby unit and women who give birth in prison are allowed to keep their babies with them until the age of 18 months.
Ms Robinson said: "We are supporting the mother through this distressing time and our thoughts are with her, her family and our staff involved.
"We are undertaking a full review and working with all relevant authorities during their investigations. It would not be appropriate to comment any further.”
A spokesperson for Surrey Police said: "We were called to HMP Bronzefield at 9.07am on Friday September 27 following reports of the death of a child.
"The death is currently being treated as unexplained and an investigation is continuing to establish the full circumstances of what happened."
South East Coast Ambulance Service also confirmed it had received a call from the prison at 8.30am and one ambulance attended.
HMP Bronzefield opened in 2004 and is located on the outskirts of Ashford, Middlesex.
It houses 572 inmates and notable inmates have included Rose West, Karen Matthews and Joanna Dennehy.
