Baby dies sharing bed with family as sisters couldn't sleep because of noisy party

A baby died after sharing a bed with his parents and two siblings, after his younger sisters crawled into the bed when they were disturbed by a nearby party.

Two-month-old Freddy Short was found dead on June 24, at his home in Brockworth, Gloucester.

Father Andrew Short woke up at 3am in the morning to find his baby boy cold, blue and unresponsive, an inquest heard.

Mother Zoe Lewis tried to administer CPR to the tot and immediately called the paramedics.

But the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

The family-of-five had slept in the same bed overnight after two of the daughters had joined them because they were unable to sleep due to noise from a party nearby.

Freddy died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Gloucestershire Coroner, Katy Skerrett, said she could not rule out that the baby's airways were obstructed as a result of sleeping in the same bed as the rest of the family.

Parents Zoe and Andrew cried and hugged each other during the inquest today.

"Co-sleeping increases the risk of infant death," the coroner said.

She also said "numerous investigations" were being carried out into his death and "every medical aspect has been looked at".

She continued: "Despite all this, the actual cause of death remains unascertained although co-sleeping increases the risk of infant death.

"Baby Freddy suffered from what is called Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and the little boy had no injury or any evidence of neglect."

"The two daughters had joined them in the bed because they were disturbed by a party nearby."

There were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

Giving evidence from the witness stand Detective Inspector Lucy Smith said: "After waking and finding the baby unresponsive the father called the emergency services and paramedics and the police arrived.

"All five had been sharing the bed and the father had been drinking some alcohol."

The coroner added: "This sad death of a two-month old baby was the tragic combination of circumstances and I conclude that the appropriate conclusion is one of natural causes."
